Evaluating Our Student

Sometimes the student or a parent goes to the school asking generally for help with mastering the subject matter.  Other times, a teacher or other school representative will contact a parent and communicate some concern over the student.  Remember, a child does not necessarily need to be failing to be eligible.  My son’s experience proves that even very good students may be entitled to and benefit from educational support.

Typically, a PPT meeting is scheduled to discuss the child’s eligibility for special education services.  We recommend that you approach the PPT process carefully.  You need to prepare for that meeting.  We can explain the two federal laws that may provide eligibility for special education services, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

It is always desirable to know what your child’s challenges are and what she or he needs. Please contact me to discuss my experiences with consultants in the area.

There are substantial advantages to being ahead of the process.  If the school conducts its own evaluations first, you will be offered or refused services on the basis of its evaluations.  While there are some potential cost savings from deferring your private evaluation until the school’s efforts are completed, such a strategy leaves you without an awareness of what you desire and no way to evaluate the efficacy of whatever may be offered to you.
